YouTube marketing is the practice of using YouTube videos, a channel and the platform’s search and recommendation systems to reach buyers, teach them and build trust.
For years most B2B teams treated YouTube as a parking lot for webinar recordings. That view is out of date. YouTube is now one of the most-cited sources inside AI answers, and the gap between the engines is wide enough to change your plan.
This guide is built on data. You will see Ahrefs counts of YouTube citations across every major AI platform, our own study of 380,000 AI answers, search demand for every YouTube keyword that matters, and the latest benchmarks on B2B video. Then I will give you a 90-day plan.

What Is YouTube Marketing?
YouTube marketing is the work of creating and distributing video on YouTube to achieve a business goal. The goal might be awareness, leads, product education, sales support or customer retention.
It covers five jobs:
- Publishing videos that answer questions buyers ask.
- Optimizing titles, descriptions, chapters and transcripts so people and machines can find them.
- Running a channel that builds a repeat audience.
- Repurposing each video into clips, posts and pages.
- Using paid ads to extend reach when the organic work is proven.
YouTube is both a video platform and a search engine. People go there to learn how to do things and to compare products. It is also a major source for Google’s AI answers, which is the part most B2B teams have not caught up with.
Why YouTube Matters Now
Start with reach. In Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey of 5,511 US adults, fielded between January 30 and June 18, 2026, 84% said they use YouTube. That figure was 84% in 2025, 85% in 2024, 83% in 2023 and 81% in 2021. The audience is not growing fast because it is already close to everyone. You can see the series on the Pew social media fact sheet.
Younger audiences are there too. Pew’s teen survey, fielded September 25 to October 9, 2025 with 1,458 US teens, found that roughly nine in ten use YouTube and roughly three-quarters use it every day. See the full teens report. Tomorrow’s buyers are watching today.
YouTube’s own press page adds scale. It says more than 20 million videos are uploaded daily, that YouTube Shorts averages over 200 billion daily views, and that Nielsen ranks YouTube first in US streaming watch time as of January 2026.
Scale cuts both ways. With 20 million uploads a day, most videos vanish. One analysis reported that 88.4% of YouTube videos had fewer than 1,000 views as of December 31, 2019, according to Music Business Worldwide, citing Pex. The data is old and the lesson still holds. Publishing is easy. Being useful is the hard part.
Search Demand: What People Type
I pulled US search volumes from Ahrefs in October 2026 for the main YouTube marketing keywords.
| Keyword | US monthly searches | Keyword difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| youtube seo | 3,700 | 40 |
| youtube statistics | 1,800 | 77 |
| youtube marketing | 1,200 | 29 |
| youtube video seo | 600 | 27 |
| youtube marketing strategy | 600 | 9 |
| youtube for business | 250 | 28 |
| b2b youtube marketing | 0 (not reported) | n/a |
Three things stand out.
- The demand sits in general terms. Almost nobody types “b2b youtube marketing.” The B2B angle is something you win by being specific inside a general topic.
- YouTube SEO is the biggest term at 3,700 searches a month, which is why this guide has a full checklist.
- “YouTube marketing strategy” has 600 searches at a difficulty of 9. That is an easy target with real intent behind it.
YouTube And AI Citations: The Data
This is where the story changes. I pulled the number of AI answers that cite YouTube from Ahrefs, as of October 1, 2026, and compared it with Reddit. The counts cover the platforms Ahrefs tracks.
| AI platform | YouTube citations | Reddit citations | YouTube vs Reddit |
|---|---|---|---|
| All platforms | 126,705,259 | 41,854,034 | 3.0x |
| Google AI Overviews | 8,192,536 | 3,955,165 | 2.1x |
| Google AI Mode | 4,760,286 | 2,527,502 | 1.9x |
| Copilot | 236,944 | 23,571 | 10.1x |
| Gemini | 804,522 | 1,695,133 | 0.5x |
| Perplexity | 2,764,226 | 4,420,495 | 0.6x |
| ChatGPT | 207,598 | 577,500 | 0.4x |
The pattern is clear. Google’s AI surfaces and Copilot lean toward YouTube. Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT lean toward Reddit. Across everything Ahrefs tracks, YouTube earns about three times as many citations as Reddit.
Now compare that with Foundation’s own study. We track six AI surfaces across B2B software categories. Our main dataset holds about 380,000 answers collected June 22 to July 24, 2026.
| AI surface | YouTube in Foundation data |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | YouTube held 5.6% to 5.8% of all citations |
| Google AI Mode | YouTube appeared in 47% of answers that cited a source |
| Google AI Overviews | YouTube appeared in 38% of answers that cited a source |
| Gemini | YouTube held 0.33% of citations |
The two datasets measure different things. Ahrefs counts citations across a huge index. Ours looks at B2B software answers and measures share. They agree on the direction. Google’s AI surfaces cite YouTube far more than Gemini does, in relative terms, even though both are Google products.
Pew Research Center found the same group of sites at the top. In its analysis of Google AI summaries from March 2025, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most frequently cited, and together made up 15% of the sources.
Why would Google’s AI features cite YouTube more than Gemini? I do not have proof. This is a measured association. The most likely reason is retrieval. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google Search, which has always surfaced video. Google’s documentation describes these features as built on its core search systems.
What does this mean for your plan? If your buyers use Google, YouTube is a citation channel. If they use ChatGPT or Perplexity, Reddit and review sites do more work, and I cover those in how Google, Claude and Perplexity differ. Check your category in the AI visibility by category lookup before you decide how much to invest.
Foundation also analyzed 17,780 cited YouTube videos to see what they share. Read the findings in YouTube AI Citations, and pair it with the guide to optimizing your YouTube channel for AI visibility.
How YouTube Marketing Works
Three systems decide whether anyone sees your video.
- Search. A viewer types a question and YouTube matches it to titles, descriptions, captions and past viewer behavior.
- Recommendations. YouTube suggests videos on the home page, in the sidebar and after a video ends. Viewer satisfaction and watch time drive those suggestions.
- External engines. Google Search and Google’s AI features pull in videos. A clean transcript and a clear description make a video easier for them to use.
A video can live in all three places at once. A tutorial might rank in YouTube search, appear in recommendations for a related video and get cited in an AI answer, all from one upload.
What B2B Video Benchmarks Show
Wistia published its 2026 State of Video report in April 2026. It combines a survey of more than 900 professionals with data from over 13 million videos and 79 million hours of viewing on its own platform. That makes it vendor data, not a random sample, and it is still one of the better B2B benchmarks available.
| Finding | Wistia 2026 |
|---|---|
| Teams that share video on LinkedIn | 81% |
| Teams that share video on YouTube | 76% |
| Teams that repurpose clips and post them to LinkedIn | 67% |
| Teams that repurpose clips and post them to YouTube | 41% |
| Lead-gen form click rate, videos over 60 minutes | 67% to 75% |
| Lead-gen form click rate, videos 30 to 60 minutes | 50% to 51% |
| Companies that spent under $5,000 on production in 2025 | Almost 40% |
| On-demand webinar engagement | About 15% to 20% |
A few lessons from the report matter for planning.
- LinkedIn and YouTube are the two main B2B video channels, and they work together. Post the full video on YouTube and cut clips for LinkedIn.
- Length depends on the job. Wistia found that the shorter the video, the higher the engagement rate. It also found that for software and technology companies, videos between three and 30 minutes perform best. Longer videos, especially webinars, drive more clicks on lead-gen forms.
- Replays of webinars between 31 and 45 minutes saw more than twice the engagement of those under 30 minutes. About 40% of registrants attend a live session, so the replay is a second chance at the audience.
- You do not need a big budget. Almost 40% of companies spent under $5,000 on video production in 2025.
You will see a number in older guides about the ideal YouTube video length. Backlinko’s 2017 study of 1.3 million videos found the average first-page result ran 14 minutes and 50 seconds. That study is almost a decade old. I would use it as a reminder that YouTube rewards depth when depth is useful, and I would not treat it as a rule.
Video Formats That Get Cited
Not every video earns a citation. Based on what we see getting pulled into AI answers, these formats show up again and again.
- The comparison video. “X vs Y” and “best tools for Z” mirror the prompts buyers type into AI tools. Fair, specific comparisons beat sales pitches.
- The category explainer. A video that explains a problem or a category without pitching. “What is a managed database and when do you need one” is a good example. It catches buyers early, before they know any vendor names.
- The how-to walkthrough. A screen recording that solves one clear task from start to finish.
- The customer story with numbers. A real customer explaining what changed, with specific results. AI engines like specifics and so do buyers.
- The original research video. Walk through your own data. A video that presents a statistic nobody else has is a natural thing to cite.
How To Set Up Your Channel
1. Decide the channel’s one job
A channel with a clear promise beats a channel with a random mix. Write one sentence: “This channel helps [buyer] do [job] without [pain].” Every video should fit under it.
2. Build the profile like a landing page
Use a clear channel name, a short description that names your category, a link to your site and a trailer or featured video for new visitors. Add your company details so the channel matches the rest of your web presence.
3. Organize playlists by buyer question
Group videos by problem, such as “Choosing a tool,” “Getting started” and “Customer stories.” Playlists keep viewers watching and give search engines a clear structure.
4. Put people on camera who know the product
Product managers, solution engineers and customer success leads know the answers. The videos that get used explain something. Polish matters less than substance.
YouTube SEO Checklist
YouTube SEO is the biggest keyword in this space, with 3,700 monthly US searches. Here is the checklist I use.
- Pick the question first. Search it on YouTube and in Google. Look at what already ranks and where it falls short.
- Put the main phrase in the title, near the start, in language a buyer would use.
- Write the first two lines of the description as a summary of the answer. Many viewers and many machines read only that part.
- Add chapters with clear names. They help viewers jump, and they break the video into pieces an engine can quote.
- Upload your own captions, or edit the auto captions. Treat the transcript as a page of content.
- Make a thumbnail that shows the topic in a few words and one clear image. Do not mislead. Viewers leave and the algorithm notices.
- Link to the matching page on your site in the description, and embed the video on that page.
- Pin a comment with a next step, such as a related video or a resource.
- Reply to comments in the first day. Early engagement signals interest.
- Update the title, description and pinned comment on older videos when facts change.
A 90-Day YouTube Plan For B2B Teams
| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Research | List 40 buyer questions from sales calls, support tickets, Reddit threads and AI prompts. Pick 12 to start. |
| 3 to 4 | Setup | Channel profile, playlists, thumbnail template, description template, caption workflow. |
| 5 to 8 | Publish | One comparison or explainer video per week. Embed each on a matching page. |
| 9 to 10 | Distribute | Cut three clips per video for LinkedIn. Share each video with sales and customer success. |
| 11 to 12 | Review | Check AI citations, watch time, assisted pipeline and sales-call mentions. Double down on the formats that work. |
Distribution is where most teams lose. Make each video once and use it many times. That is the core idea of my book, Create Once, Distribute Forever. A single 15-minute video can become a blog post, a set of clips, a newsletter section and a sales asset.
How To Measure YouTube Marketing
Views alone mislead. A video with 800 views that gets cited in AI answers for a high-intent prompt can be worth more than one with 80,000 views from the wrong audience. Track these:
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| AI citations of your videos | Shows reach inside AI answers, where buyers may never click |
| Watch time and average view duration | Signals how useful the video is |
| Click-through rate on impressions | Shows whether the title and thumbnail work |
| Assisted pipeline | Ties video to revenue |
| Sales-call mentions | Tells you whether buyers have seen the video |
| Traffic to the matching page | Shows whether video lifts the page it supports |

Common YouTube Marketing Mistakes
- Uploading webinar recordings with no edit, no chapters and no clear title.
- Chasing views from an audience that will never buy.
- Skipping captions and descriptions.
- Making product pitches instead of answers.
- Posting in bursts, then going silent.
- Never linking the video to a page on your site.
- Judging the program after four weeks.
What We Do Not Know Yet
I want to be careful about the limits. Our dataset is a snapshot from the summer of 2026 and covers B2B software categories in the US. The Ahrefs counts cover a very large index and are not limited to B2B. The gap between Google and Gemini may close or widen. YouTube may matter more in some categories than others. I will update this post as new data arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is YouTube marketing?
It is the use of YouTube videos and channels to reach buyers, teach them and build trust, often supported by paid ads.
Does YouTube marketing work for B2B?
It can. B2B buyers research on YouTube, and Google’s AI answers cite it often. In our data, YouTube appeared in 47% of Google AI Mode answers that cited a source.
How much does YouTube marketing cost?
Less than most teams assume. Wistia’s 2026 report found almost 40% of companies spent under $5,000 on video production in 2025. Clear audio, a clean screen and a person who knows the topic beat expensive production with thin content.
How often should I post?
Choose a rhythm you can keep for a year. One video a week is a strong target for many teams. Quality and consistency matter more than volume.
How long should B2B YouTube videos be?
It depends on the job. Wistia found software and technology videos between three and 30 minutes perform best on engagement. Longer webinars and deep dives drive more lead-gen clicks. Match length to the question.
Does YouTube help with AI search?
Yes, especially on Google’s AI surfaces and Copilot. Ahrefs data shows YouTube earning about three times the citations Reddit earns across all tracked platforms, although Reddit leads on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
YouTube or LinkedIn for B2B video?
Use both. Wistia found 81% of B2B teams share video on LinkedIn and 76% on YouTube. YouTube is the searchable library and LinkedIn is the feed. Post the full video on YouTube and cut clips for LinkedIn.
How long before YouTube marketing works?
Plan on several months of steady output before judging results. Search-driven videos can grow slowly and keep paying off.
Do I need to show my face?
No. Screen recordings with a clear voiceover work well for walkthroughs. For explainers and customer stories, a real person on camera builds trust.
What is YouTube SEO?
It is the practice of optimizing titles, descriptions, chapters, captions and thumbnails so your videos show up in YouTube search, Google results and AI answers.
