In my world there are two types of burgers – those with peanut butter and those without it.
In my last year of university I found Darrells. A small restaurant that sold a local gem – “The Peanut Butter Burger.” Its the perfect combination of beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar, bacon and….peanut butter; on a sesame seed bun.
The concept of a burger having peanut butter on it makes many of us cringe. Heck, a few of you are probably gagging as you read this. So why would a restaurant even dare to make a burger that goes against norm to this extreme?
Because it works.
It works because it gets people talking. But most importantly, it works because its worth talking about.Too many business get out of hand with their wackiness. They do things just to do them rather than doing them to provide customers with value. Its an idea that is worth sharing because its a burger that you wouldn’t.
There are tons of burger joints that play it safe and follow the rules. But its not just burger joints. Its businesses everywhere.
Many businesses feel as if the best way to avoid failure is to play it safe and stick to the way things have always been. They refuse to cheat – they refuse to break the rules. And as a result they are just another boring company resisting the chance to become remarkable. To be worth talking about and ultimately more successful than they could imagine.
The big difference between Darrells and your typical burger joint isn’t the Peanut Butter Burger. The biggest difference is the courage to resist status quo. When they launched this burger they realized that it could fail drastically – they also realized that that’s not exactly a bad thing.
