Between 1990 and 1996 families tuned into their televisions regularly to watch Will Smith and his crazy antics in Bel Air. One of the most memorable characters from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air was the straight shooting cousin Carlton Banks. Carlton was portrayed by actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who many believed came out of no where into the Hollywood scene. Although this was definitely his BIG BREAK Carlton worked his butt off many years before becoming a well known face across North America.

Like many celebs, you don’t start off as a household name – You start off as just an ordinary chap trying to make it. As you will see from this video below, the road to success isn’t all about glamor and glitz. Persistence is necessary. No matter how ulgy it gets you have to keep your head up and push forward. If you are persistent at chasing your dreams you will find that you must crawl before you can walk.

Carlton found himself in several small gigs as he attempted to find success. As Gen Y Blogger Matt Chevy said, Big Goals start with Baby steps. Successful music producer, Quincy Jones said, “Life is hard by the yard but by the inch it’s a cinch.” This couldn’t be more true. If you are able to take your large goals and break them down into several smaller ones, it will be easier to persist and make things happen. If you have the goal of owning an NFL Team like Gary Vaynerchuck, smaller goals must be accomplished to raise money (Such as Wine TV). Are you taking small steps – or leaping into the dark?

Carlton worked his butt off day in and day out until he reached a point that he and others around them considered to be successful. As you can see in this video, Carlton  (or Alfonso) was busting his but to become a success FAR before he rocked our minds with his Tom Jones renditions. An overnight success works countless hours and misses many sleeps until they reach that special place they want to be.

It’s not easy to get to the top, you just have to be willing to put in the days, hours, heck – YEARS into getting there. The main issue with a lot of people is staying on top once they get there. Often times we reach that point of success and feel as if were on top of the world. This is the mentality that will result in you going from being a household name like “Carlton Banks” to a guy on the cover of Peoples “Where are they Now?” magazine.

This story about Carlton can be applied to all of our lives regardless of what our dreams may be. If you are dreaming of some day becoming a famous gospel singer – remember to take it one song at a time. If you are looking to be a millionaire some day – Remember, take it one dollar at a time. I believe the gifted best selling author Stephen King said it best,

In an early interview…a radio talk-show host asked me how I wrote. My reply: “One word at a Time”
